  • Typical use of combined oral contraceptive pills prevents a diagnosed pregnancy in only 90 to 96 percent of women, which means that four to 10 women out of every 100 using the pill for one year will have a diagnosed pregnancy. 4,6,10
  • The pill’s third mechanism is to change the lining of the endometrium (the lining of the womb), which creates a hostile environment for a newly created human being. The tiny baby cannot implant and is spontaneously aborted by the body. 4,5,6,11,12
  • As quoted in the booklet Does the Birth Control Pill Cause Abortions? by Randy Alcorn, a representative of the Ortho-McNeil pharmaceutical company said, “If you end up with a fertilized egg [new human being], it [the baby boy or girl] won’t implant and grow because of the less hospitable endometrium.” 1
  • “It seems unlikely that implantation would be possible in the altered endometrium developed under the influence of most of the suppressants [of ovulation].” 3
  • Ectopic pregnancy 4
  • Drugs that are known to interact with the pill to cause an increased likelihood of pregnancy:
    • Rifampin 7,8
    • Drugs used for epilepsy, such as barbiturates 7,8
    • Phenobarbital 7,8 (anticonvulsant; can also be used as anti-anxiety medication)
    • Topiramate (TOPAMAX® 7,8; prescribed for migraines and, in higher doses, for Chiari patients)
    • Carbamazepine (Tegretol® 7,8 is one brand; anticonvulsant medication)
    • Phenytoin (Dilantin® 7,8 is one brand; anti-seizure medication)
    • Phenylbutazone (Butazolidin® 7,8 is one brand; nonsteroid, anti-inflammatory medication)
  • Certain drugs used in the treatment of HIV or AIDS 7,8
  • Certain antibiotics 7,8
  • St. John’s wort 7,8

Impact on Reproductive Organs

    • Breakthrough bleeding 4,7,8
    • Spotting 4,7,8
    • Change in menstrual flow 4,7,8
    • Amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods) 7,8
    • Temporary infertility after discontinuation of treatment 4,7,8<!–
    • Breast changes: tenderness, enlargement, secretion 7,8
    • Change in cervical erosion and secretion 7,8
    • Decrease in lactation when given immediately postpartum 7,8<!–
    • Vaginal candidiasis (yeast infection) 4,7,8
    • Cystitis-like syndrome (frequent urination, sometimes with a painful bladder) 7,8
    • Vaginitis (inflammation of the vaginal area, often associated with irritation, itching or infection) 4,7,8
    • Increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases 4
    • Cancer (breast, uterine and vaginal) 4
    • Endometriosis 4

Environmental

    • Researchers have found that caged adult trout exposed to ethynylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen, were half as fertile as fish kept in clean water. The trout were exposed to the estrogen for two months, and then bred with a healthy female. 13
    • Doug Myers, a wetlands and habitat specialist for the Puget Sound Action Team, said that scientists are “finding the presence of female hormones making the male species less male” in frogs, river otters and fish. 5,13
    • “Scientists in western Washington found that synthetic estrogen - a common ingredient in oral contraceptives - drastically reduces the fertility of male rainbow trout.” 5
    • After randomly netting 123 trout downstream from a Boulder Creek sewer treatment facility, including 101 female trout, 12 male trout and 10 “intersex” trout (having both male and female traits), scientists in Colorado discovered that “estrogens and other steroid hormones from birth-control pills and patches” caused the fish’s genetic alteration. 5

Spiritual

  • A couple taking the pill: “Hence to use this divine gift [the sexual act] while depriving it [taking contraception], even if only partially, of its meaning and purpose, is equally repugnant to the nature of man and of woman, and is consequently in opposition to the plan of God and His holy will.” 9

Relationship

    • Depression 7,8
    • Changes in libido (usually decreased libido) 4,7,8
    • Ways in which the pill destroys relationships:
      • It easily opens the door for marital infidelity;
      • it especially opens the door for temptation to youth;
      • “a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, and… reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires, no longer considering her as his partner whom he should surround with care and affection.”9

Frankenstein’s Monster: The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.

April 4, 2008 · 2 Comments

The controversial Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill (HFE Bill) is reaching the final stages of its journey through the British Houses of Parliament. The next stage will be the readings of the Bill in the House of Commons, if the Bill is successful then it will be enacted in law. God help England if it comes to this, which at the time of writing looks likely.

Whilst the current HFE Act made law in 1990, allowing for abortion to full term for disabled babies amongst other heinous clauses, is preposterous and completely contravenes Catholic moral codes, this new version is, if it is possible , far worse. Consider this; the new HFE Bill will allow for animal-human hybrid embryos to be created for experimentation, this alone makes it possibly the worst piece of legislation imaginable. The government intends by this bill to redefine humanity and  allow the creation of monsters. We know that parliament literally has not the power to do this, because it cannot alter Gods law and make something that which it is not, however these Frankensteins will assert their perverse desires and we will see the consequences soon enough.

Further horrors include the concept of “saviour siblings” being  legitimised. That is children “created” via IVF deliberately to conform with the DNA another sick child of the family so that the “saviour Sibling” can be a donor for the sick child. Also the definition of  family will be altered, dismissing the idea that a father is required and therefore allowing for lesbians to obtain IVF treatment. Abortion fanatics will press for amendments to include nurses being given licence to carry out abortions and  the removal of the two doctor signature, so that abortions become as easy to obtain and sweets.

And for the Irish……..

But, for Ireland, there is another very sinister and terrible threat inherent in this Bill. The extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to the North of Ireland. Although this is not yet written into the draft Bill, abortion promoter Evan Harris MP (LIB) has said he and others intend to table an amendment in the Commons to use this Bill as a vehicle to extend the Abortion Act and enforce it in the North. Harris is so prolific in his anti life views that even his friends call him “Dr Death”. Having qualified as a  doctor shortly before he went into politics he chaired the Committee on the HFE Bill, ensuring that all  views against the vile legislation were treated with contempt. The fact that he is in a “relationship” with the secretary for the biggest abortion provider in Britain, BPAS, didn’t concern the government , who considered that this would not at all colour his view of the task of chairing the Committee.  Harris has previously called the fact that the North of Ireland does not have “equal access” to abortion (as Britain, I suppose) “disgraceful”! Harris is indeed the Robespierre of this particular revolution, shunned and despised by even his own colleagues who see him as a “loner“ , a hater of Catholics and a virulent pro abort. He will one day, as we all will, stand before the Court of Christ the King, but for now he is the embodiment of the enemy and is poised to launch an attack on our children.

The Catholics…..

One gladdening sight which has come from all this is to see the Catholic Cardinal O’Brien of Scotland turn roundly on this Bill, denouncing it and clearly stating that Catholic MPs must resist and vote against such monstrous legislation. 12 Catholic Labour MPs threatened to resign if the Prime Minister would not allow them to vote against the anti Catholic clauses in the Bill. As this is a government Bill no free vote was being allowed, thus requiring all MPs to vote in favour. First Paul Murphy, then two other cabinet ministers said they would resign if not given a free vote, then 9 other Labour Catholic MPs also joined the fray.  On Easter Sunday the Cardinal gave out a clear message against this Bill, on Monday the British Prime Minister started a climb down from his previous position of no free vote on conscience matters to allowing a free vote at the first reading. His insisted however that  the  free vote would not be extended to the second and third readings, and this has already been rejected as an unacceptable compromise. But see the power of a Cardinal! Even weakened by  40 years of  liberal Catholicism, and still the Grace he has from God, when he speaks Catholic truth, is sufficient to cower the Prime Minister. Hopefully the Catholics who have so far made this stance (and it is only the Catholic view which has out rightly challenged this Bill)  will retain their courage and fight  this matter further, if they will lead in this it is sure that others will follow.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Conner has also spoken against the Bill following Cardinal O’Brien’s lead. We have yet to hear from Cardinal Brady.

The  Protestants………

Mr Ian Paisley asked  the question of Gordon Brown on the 26th March 2008 in Westminster,

“Would the Prime Minister give to the people of Northern Ireland the assurance today that the Government will not countenance supporting any attempt to use the embryo Bill to legalise abortion in Northern Ireland through back-door legislation, keeping in mind that all parties in Northern Ireland are opposed to this? Surely that decision should be made by Stormont, and Stormont alone.”

Gordon Brown answered;

“The matter of an amendment on abortion to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill is a matter for this House. I do not believe that the House will wish to change its mind on these issues, but that is a matter of a free vote of the House of Commons.”

Thus confirming our worst fears, that the Stormont parliament will be ignored on  this issue, despite the recent debate in  October of 2007 rejecting any liberalisation of abortion in the North of Ireland.

The DUP has  on their website:  “I and my party believe in the rights of the unborn child. We will resist any and all attempts to introduce a liberalised abortion regime here.” (Paisley)

And Dame Nuala O’Loan…….

Catholic lawyer, Dame Nuala O’Loan, who recently retired from the post of Police Ombudsman, publicly and vociferously lent her voice to the  debate over the HFE Bill and its threat to Ireland. She stated in The Irish Catholic “Human life is sacred. To create it in order to use it for research purposes and then destroy it must be anathema to any society which claims to value society”.  She also warned the British government against forcing abortion on the North and warned the Irish that this would indeed be the case if this Bill were allowed, and also called for the Prime Minister to allow free votes for Catholic MPs. Her intercession in the debate caused the matter to be publicised in other media, which to date has tried to keep the matter of abortion out of the limelight.

What can we do?

It is no coincidence that the Motu Proprio was released and then a Cardinal  finds his voice! Pray the Rosary and attend Mass, Catholic graces are all that can really affect this situation. Remember, as Pope St Pius x said, “All the strength of Satan’s reign is due to the easygoing weakness of Catholics”

We must in any case resort to the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart because, even if the abortion amendment fails, the main act will still be enforced on the North, where no doubt there will be some who will dabble with the animal -people embryos.

And know this, the abortionists have tried every subtle way to press abortion on the Irish people of the North, and it has been vomited back at them from the belly of the people every time, force is their last resort.

Feminism and Abortion

April 2, 2008 · 5 Comments

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to thy word”.

Feminism is a most deadly thought of the Devil. It exists to exactly oppose The Blessed Trinity. Amidst the plethora of  feminist writings there is no specific philosophy, as in say Marxism, but rather a flow of angry passion being vented in any direction. However, its core is to totally reject the Father and the Son. Its ambition is to be the antithesis of Mary, who declared “Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be done unto me according to thy word.”

There is no such thing as “kind feminism“, or a “true feminist” who cares for women and children. This is an oxymoron. Feminism is a monstrous thing and  mutates and destroys femininity, opposing the gift Our Lady brings to women of Catholic motherhood and the wonderful  graces therein.

There is a tendency to fall into the idea that  feminism had some righteous basis in the way women were treated and that’s why it started to rear its head in its present recognisable form in the 18th century. This is the same as saying that there may be some grounds for abortion in the rape victim scenario. If feminists thrive on one thing it’s the overemphasis of their own suffering as opposed to that of all humankind and the deliberate emotional intensity they lever into all their arguments and words. Don’t believe it. Just as abortion is murder of a child in EVERY circumstance so feminism is the rejection of God in EVERY circumstance.

Eve was the first feminist, she listened to the serpent and defied  God. What suffering was she undergoing in the Garden of Eden? What terrible torture was it to be in paradise? No, she rejected God by the exercise of her own will against His. Just like Judas, and all the others who have defied Him.

Therefore, feminism is an old idea but it really comes into its own in the 18th Century with the dawn of the French Revolution, that hideous attack on Catholic France. This talk of “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” was the backdrop  for the neurotic writings of  Mary Wollstonecraft who penned out of spleen  her “Vindication of the Rights of Woman”. A piece which acts as an  excellent example of paucity in reason and argument, a trait which all future Feminists have adopted to date.

Just as Christ was the Fruit of Our Lady’s womb, so abortion is the fruit of the Feminist womb. Murderers of their own children. As Father Malichi Martin has said, “What depth of Hell is deep enough to hide their shame….” Just as Christ died to make good Original Sin, suffering Gods Justice for our souls , Feminists repeat that Original Sin over and over again, finally denying their own children not only life but  Baptism, so ensuring that  millions of souls will never see God in the Face.

The sadness of feminism is everywhere, they  have rejected Our Lady and all the power she has over mankind. They have lost their children, their homes, their husbands and finally their minds.  Despite all the talk of the “world being a better place once women were in charge” it is in fact a far worse place than ever before. Women turned in against themselves in hatred of something that would save them, they are listening to the serpent and spreading the venom.

And this venom is very poisonous, although is seems so sweet. All minds in this time have been attacked by this movement against Christ. Every small act rejecting traditional femininity and asserting the will against God and nature is an act of  feminism. Men have very much succumbed to it and it makes them miserable. Many women are pushed into it by their education, be very careful of your daughters education. If you don’t it won’t be long before she’s skulking around the house giving out because “Daddy never makes the tea!”, despite the fact that the man never had a days rest in twenty years so she could be given the comfort of a good home!

To see how evil it is note this quote from feminist writer Marge Piercy published in The Blanket:

“I will choose what enters me, what becomes flesh of my flesh. Without choice, no politics, no ethics lives. I am not your cornfield, not your uranium mine, not your calf for fattening, not your cow for milking. You may not use me as your factory. Priests and legislators do not hold shares in my womb or my mind. If I give it to you, I want it back. My life is a non-negotiable demand.” - Marge Piercy

This is an obvious parody of Genesis 2:23 “And Adam said: This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh:  she shall be called woman because she was taken out of man.” Also it is a direct slight to the Blessed Virgin who accepted without hesitation her motherhood.

And what was the result of the eating of the forbidden fruit?  Shame at their nakedness. And what is the result of feminism? Shame at their own womanhood.

The true reason behind the irrationality of feminism is this, the devil knew his undoing would be a woman, that one day  a woman would crush his head and he has hated us ever since. That woman was the Blessed Virgin, Mother of God the Son, Daughter of God the Father, Spouse of the Holy Ghost.
“And the  Lord God said to the serpent: ……………..I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.” (Genesis 3:14/15)

When in Rome don’t do as the Romans do…….

April 2, 2008 · 2 Comments

From Bishop Williamsons blog some sound advice:

Romans Measured

Eleison Comments XXX

From France I received earlier this month what seems to me a well-measured assessment of who today’s Roman churchmen are and what they are trying to achieve. Here are extracts:

“...The churchmen in Rome are battling with us (clergy and laity of the Society of St. Pius X) to bring us around to accepting their Conciliar religion. Cardinal Castrillon and even the Pope are convinced that we are mistaken, and that it is their duty by all means fair and borderline foul to get us to accept the essence of the Second Vatican Council, which has become their Credo. To this end they work on us with determination and patience, but also with authority, always “for our own good“.

On our side, because we insist on sane thinking as an essential precondition to staying faithful to the irreformable doctrine that has been handed down to us, we find ourselves obliged to resist their pressure and so to disobey today’s Magisterium in order to obey the God who does not change. However… we must never forget that despite their courtesy and subjective kindness, these Romans are, objectively speaking, our enemies. Beneath the appearance of good they are motivated by a spirit that is not good. An old proverb says that if you sup with the Devil, you need a long spoon…”

The writer’s conclusion is also wise: “… On our side we should be devoting all our energies and abilities to keeping our faithful informed, to strengthening them spiritually and to forming them doctrinally… by not doing this enough, we lose in men and resources every time Rome attacks. In the trials lying ahead of us, reinforcing the quality of our troops will have more effect than trying to amass large numbers of Catholics who do not understand the need to fight”.

“As Archbishop Lefebvre said on September 4, 1987, in Econe, “We must hold on, absolutely, through thick and thin… Rome, I declare, has lost the Faith, Rome has apostatized.” End of the writer’s quote. Kyrie eleison.

Eugenic Abortion in Spain on the way to making Downs Syndrome Children extinct- Is this the is the ambition of the Department of Health in the North of Ireland?

March 31, 2008 · 11 Comments

Whilst Government pretends to care about the treatment of disabled people, secretly in the North of Ireland, disabled children are being screened out of existance. Or at lest that is presumably the hope of those who support the scandalous practice of illegal eugenic abortion in the North of Ireland. See this previous story for details…….

What can happen is unfolding is Spain, that previous stronghold of Catholisism and moral values, now a Socialist cess pit and a free for all abortion haven. The number of children born with Downs Syndrome has halved due to eugenic abortion. How long before these happy faces are a thing of the past, murdered before birth, due to the callous search for perfection amongst the puritanical abortion fanatics?

In recent statements, Cruz said, “Many of these children who would make their families happy have been forgotten and left among the 1.1 million fetuses killed in Spain since 1985 when abortion was partially legalized.” Catholic News Agency

Gordon Brown refuses to rule out forcing the Abortion Act on the North of Ireland.

March 28, 2008 · No Comments

From Hansard 26th March 2008 (click here)

“Rev. Ian Paisley (North Antrim) (DUP): Would the Prime Minister give to the people of Northern Ireland the assurance today that the Government will not countenance supporting any attempt to use the embryo Bill to legalise abortion in Northern Ireland through back-door legislation, keeping in mind that all parties in Northern Ireland are opposed to this? Surely that decision should be made by Stormont, and Stormont alone.

The Prime Minister: First, this is the first time that the right hon. Gentleman has been in the House since he announced that he was giving up his job as First Minister, and I want to thank him for everything that he has done as First Minister. The whole House—indeed, the whole of the United Kingdom—owes him a huge debt of gratitude for the way he has brought together the parties in Northern Ireland and been a very successful First Minister over the past few months.

The matter of an amendment on abortion to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill is a matter for this House. I do not believe that the House will wish to change its mind on these issues, but that is a matter of a free vote of the House of Commons.”

This is very unfortunate given that Stormont recently voted in a large majority against any liberalisation of the law on abortion here. Also it would not only be undemocratic but unconstitutional to make such a forced move on the North given the expressed wishes of the people and their representitives.

Cardinal O’Brien of Scotland Voices Strong Views Against the HFE Bill.

March 21, 2008 · No Comments

CATHOLIC CHURCH “APPALLED” AT HUMAN FERTILISATION AND EMBRYOLOGY BILL
Below is the statement released by the Cardinal last November.

Scotland’s two leading churchmen, Catholic Archbishops Cardinal Keith O’Brien and Archbishop Mario Conti, have released a statement on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill prior to the House of Lords debate tomorrow, Monday 19 November.
Archbishop Conti, who is also Chairman of the Joint Catholic Bioethics Committee of Britain and Ireland, stated: “We are frankly appalled at proposals which would allow the creation of organisms which cross the species barrier.”
“We call on the government to think again about the role of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority which has proved completely inadequate in dealing with ethical issues.”
“The bill includes disturbing developments in embryonic experimentation and breaks down the natural bonds of family life linked with procreation.”
Cardinal O’Brien stated: “Abortion levels in our country can only be described as scandalous. Our concern is that this bill may be used to worsen our situation.”

Full text of ttatement
“We urge politicians to take into account the serious concerns of the Catholic Community when they deal with the issues in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (HFE) Bill.

This bill raises grave concerns not only in what it explicitly covers but in its scope and how it may be amended to deal with abortion.

We have previously informed the Prime Minister, in connection with this legislation, of our worry at the proposals which diminish the natural status of fathers and disturb the natural bonds between parents and children.

We believe that we represent a wider public disquiet by drawing attention to our further concerns arising from the bill. These include the proposals to cross the species barrier, entailed in the creation of hybrids and chimeras. This is not a justifiable direction for legitimate scientific research. It is a dangerous and unnecessary precedent which does not respect the dignity of the human person. We note that such practices are banned in Canada, Australia and many European countries.

We are concerned at the level of control government provides to the work of scientists and researchers in what can be very complex areas. We are convinced of the need for a National Advisory Committee which is free of commercial research interests to give appropriate advice to Government on bioethical issues. Such a group needs to be widely representative of ethical expertise within society. The public debate has so far been dominated by scientific and medical opinion when in reality mature ethical systems have a more crucial contribution in dealing with the issues at stake. The role of the existing HFEA is inadequate in meeting these needs and of informing the wider public of developments.

There is also a need for an honest appraisal of foetal sentience which to our mind was not adequately recognised in recent parliamentary considerations.

We are appalled at the presence of abortion and its continued expansion in our society. Every abortion is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person. We call on the government to review the soaring level of abortion and its damaging impact on individuals and society. The HFE bill should not in any way be used to increase abortion but if the matter is addressed it must only be to provide measures which dramatically reduce this social ill and contribute to creating a society more sensitive to the rights and value of human life.”

Catholic MP Paul Murphy Threatens To Resign Over Anti-Catholic Bill.

March 21, 2008 · No Comments

Leading Labour MP, Paul Murphy, has threatened to resign if he, and the rest of the Government MPs, are not given a free vote over the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill due before the House of Commons soon.

Murphy is amongst several other Catholics who have demanded that, for the first time in history, the Government relinquish its whip over a government bill and allow a free vote on grounds of conscience. The HFE Bill is obnoxious for many reasons to Catholic conscience. Primarily is seeks to make Britain one of the few countries in the world to allow hybrid embyos that are half human (these have been called “rabbit people”). Also some extreme pro abortion MPs such as Evan Harris have threatened to use the Bill to force abortion on the North of Ireland.

It is pleasing to see that Mr Murphy and other Catholics are taking a stand against this terrible piece of proposed legislation, however the question still remains….why did it take them to so long to realise the sort of Government they work for?

Dear Cardinal Brady… What Did The Martyrs Die For….?

March 20, 2008 · 1 Comment

Today the Ecumaniac Cardinal Brady, having altered his own Catholic liturgical practices  by moving the Chrism  Mass to last Tuesday, attended a service  in the heretical church if Ireland. Along with Protestants, Hindus, Jews and Budhists the Cardinal attended the Maunday service where the Queen of England gave out Maunday money to some selected pensioners. Actually a tradition of old Catholic Kings and Queens, now a remenant of those grand old occassions. The Queen of England is, of course, the head of the Church of England, since the bloody Protestant reformation.

Many Irish also gave their lives for their Faith and the Mass. See for a good read on this subject “Ireland’s Loyalty to the Mass” by Father Augustine.

“They never fail who die

In a great cause.The block may soak their gore;

Their heads may sodden in the sun; their limbs

Be strung to city gates, and castle walls-

But still their spirit walks aboad.”

Considering that its Maunday Thursday that the Cardinal betrays his Church I wonder if he was given a silver coin……….

I would also remind the Cardinal of the words of Saint Maxiillion Kolbe who said “Ecumenism is the enemy of the Immaculata.”

Not only did nearly the whole of the country ignore the Church regarding the move of Saint Patricks feast day by going out carousing during Holy Week, but now this abismal sight.

The Cardinal has confirmed the error in all those souls who are misled in other religions. If he truly believes his Faith how could he do this?

We can only pray and trust in the Sacred Heart and Our Lady.

Mrs Clinton Insults St Patrick and the Irish.

March 19, 2008 · No Comments

St Patrick was Pro Life

Full story at Life site. This child points out the contradiction in Hilary Clinton marching in a St Patricks Day parade.

As a matter of fact St Patricks Day was actually on the 15th of March this year, something which seems to have escaped everybodies notice. The Church decides the feast days of its Saints, thus the 17th was set by the Church. This year the Church changed St Patricks, St Josephs and the Annunciation so as not to collide with Holy Week whan Catholics are supposed to be in mourning, not feasting.

And you thought the Reformation was over….

March 13, 2008 · 2 Comments

Bishop Patrick O’Donoghue of Lancaster, UK, was summoned to appear before the UK House of Commons Select Committtee on Education, on Wednesday, 12 March, to answer charges of “Catholic Fundamentalism”, following his recent publication “Fit for Mission —Catholic Schools”.

Strains of St Thomas More start to sound…….

We at Hidden Ireland pray that the Bishop has the strength and grace to stand up to this bullying from Westminster. Catholic children deserve a Catholic education. It is their birthright.

And, for the record what exactly is “Catholic Fundamentalism”?

The Fit For Mission document is the best piece of work we have seen from the Catholic Church in recent times. If the Bishops if Ireland were to adopt it we may be able to consider sending our children to Catholic schools again.

Missing artwork of Virgin Mary as stripper stirs University of Dallas

Stolen print of stripper Virgin pits school, artistic freedom

08:44 AM CST on Saturday, March 8, 2008

By SAM HODGES / The Dallas Morning News Looking back, trouble seemed likely when an artwork depicting a stripper as the Virgin Mary went on display last month at the University of Dallas.

And trouble sure came, though the artist says she was making a point about perceptions and didn’t intend anything sacrilegious.

The artwork – a print – prompted complaints from students at the Catholic college in Irving. Then, on Feb. 14, it was discovered missing from a school gallery.

It still hasn’t been found, and the case is being investigated as a theft by campus police. Meanwhile, students, alumni and others have been weighing in, though some never got a chance to see the print and have had to rely on descriptions.

University president Frank Lazarus, in particular, has been criticized by alumni who feel he erred by not ordering the print removed after he got a look at it.

“It was imprudent of him to leave it up,” said Tom Lagarde, a member of the Class of ‘97 and secretary of the school’s national alumni board.

“Regardless of what the artist’s message was … the means she used were illicit, at least for Catholics.”

Dr. Lazarus didn’t respond to requests for an interview. But earlier he released a statement denouncing the apparent theft and acknowledging the school’s struggle to balance academic and artistic freedom with preservation of “Catholic character.”

“A number of mistakes were made, and there are lessons to be learned here,” he said.

The print is the work of Joanna Gianulis, a senior art major at Murray State University in Kentucky. It came to UD as part of an exhibit of Murray State students’ work, following an exhibit at Murray State of art by UD students.

Ms. Gianulis, reached Friday by e-mail, said she has no digital image of the print. Others who have seen it say it includes a veiled young woman wearing pasties and a G-string with money stuck in it.

Asked for her description, Ms. Gianulis said:

“The work is a black and white woodcut relief print depicting a scantily clad stripper wearing a veil and holding a rosary. Other details in the work are scrolls saying ‘Sinner or Saint?’ in Spanish and referencing the Virgin [of] Guadalupe, and also a snake, some white lilies, a pair of scales, and also a small image of a bar of soap opposite a bottle marked ‘xxx.’ ”

The Virgin of Guadalupe is a revered image to many Catholics, particularly Hispanics who accept the legend of the 16th-century appearance of Mary, the mother of Jesus, to a Mexican peasant.

Dallas is a center of Virgin of Guadalupe devotion, and its downtown cathedral is named for her.

But Ms. Gianulis said she didn’t meant to offend Catholics in Dallas or anywhere else, and didn’t even know UD is a Catholic school.

The purpose of the print, she said, is to raise questions about who is perceived as saint and who as sinner.

“How do we know that an exotic dancer is sinful?” she said in a prepared statement for the UD art department. “What if she has the best intentions and strives only to help those in need? Many single mothers are in this position and that is another reason why I chose to reference the Virgin Mary, because she was another woman who was in a tough position and probably received much criticism because of it.”

‘Noble intentions’

The print, along with others from Murray State, was exhibited at UD beginning Feb. 8.

Jeanne Luthi, a senior art major, helped install the exhibit. She recalls seeing Ms. Gianulis’ print and saying to herself, “Oooh, there might be a problem with this.” But looking further, she said, she could see the artist had social commentary in mind and was using techniques familiar in contemporary art.

Juergen Strunck is the UD art professor who helped arrange for the exhibit and was there for the installation. He said that if he had interpreted the work as sacrilegious or pornographic, he would have considered not displaying it. But he saw it as a serious work, so he went ahead.

“I’m a strong believer in academic freedom,” he said, adding that he had organized about 150 exhibits in nearly four decades of teaching at UD.

A few days passed without trouble, but soon students like Joshua Neu, a junior majoring in English and philosophy, saw the print and became upset.

“The university was wrong to exhibit it,” he said in an e-mail. “The university ought not display images that make profane that which the institution holds sacred.”

Dr. Lazarus was away from the school when the work was first exhibited, but when he returned he learned of complaints. He went to see for himself, and in his statement said that while “the artist surely has noble intentions” he found the print objectionable.

But Dr. Lazarus also had academic freedom concerns. Instead of having the work removed, he and other officials decided to put up signs at the exhibit warning that some images might be considered offensive.

His statement says he was considering further restrictions on the afternoon of Feb. 14, when Mr. Strunck discovered the print missing.

Campus police quickly opened an investigation but have no leads.

Student uproar

“I have a hard time believing some person off campus would come and remove the artwork and not be noticed,” Mr. Strunck said. “It would have to be someone within the university community.”

John Bloch is a senior who covered the exhibit controversy for the student newspaper. He couldn’t recall anything causing more talk on campus and noted that the paper had seen a heavy response in letters to the editor from students, alumni and others.

Mr. Bloch said campus opinions vary, but some students were offended enough by the image to argue the theft was justified.

But Ms. Luthi said UD students need to be exposed to contemporary art, even if some of it is upsetting.

“People read [philosopher Friedrich] Nietzsche in the core curriculum, and that’s fairly anti-Christian,” she said. “It just feels like the visual arts are being held to a completely different standard.”

Dr. Lazarus has said the controversy may prompt the school’s Center for Christianity and the Common Good to hold a forum for discussion and debate.

Meanwhile, the exhibit in question has closed, and the art – minus the missing print –has gone back to Murray State.

There, Ms. Gianulis struggles with her feelings.

“While I am very glad that my artwork is causing people to think about how powerful art can be, I am also sad because I don’t feel that many people gave the artwork a chance,” she said. “They didn’t try to understand what I was actually trying to say.”

Here We Go… Hi Big Brother!

March 7, 2008 · No Comments

In a state of surveillance

We are about to enter into a state where every digital step you take is recorded. At the end of March, the Government will introduce the most draconian law in the history of personal privacy in Ireland: 24-hour internet monitoring. A log will be made of everyone’s internet activity and every email sent and received. Greetings from the State of surveillance.

By Marie Boran
Thursday February 28 2008

By the end of March 2008, the Irish Government will begin mass digital surveillance, noting when we log on and log off the internet, as well as every email we send and who we send it to. We have entered into a new democratic state where our entire digital footprint is recorded and stored for up to two years by our internet service providers (ISPs).

Legal professionals suggest the move equates to the mass digital surveillance of the entire people of Ireland and may leave the Government to weather a brewing legal storm over the issues of human rights and privacy.

The Criminal Justice (Terrorist Offences) Act 2005 implies that personal data would only ever be accessed in the situation of fighting terrorist offences.

But this is not the case: presently your stored telecommunications data may be accessed in the investigation of any crime, be it serious or trivial, in relation to a terrorist offence or not at all.

Bill Clinton Lashes Out at Pro-Life Students in Steubenville

February 19, 2008 · No Comments

This report was sent to Hidden Ireland from America:

Bill Clinton Lashes Out at Pro-Life Students in Steubenville

Follows Outburst of Rage Earlier in Canton, Ohio at Obama Supporter

STEUBENVILLE, OHIO - Agitated after being greeted by over a hundred pro-life students at a rally in Steubenville tonight, Clinton lost his temper yet again after losing his cool at an Obama supporter in Canton, Ohio. This time, Clinton lashed out during his speech at the pro-life students:

“I gave you the answer. We disagree with you,” Clinton said. “You wanna criminalize women and their doctors and we disagree. I reduced abortion. Tell the truth, tell the truth, If you were really pro-life, if you were really pro-life, you would want to put every doctor and every mother as an accessory to murder in prison. And you won’t say you wanna do that because you know, that you wouldn’t have a lick of political support. Now, the issue is who, the issue is, you can’t name me anybody presently in politics that did more to introduce policies that reduce the number of real abortions instead of the hot air putting out to tear people up and make votes by dividing America. This is not your rally. I heard you. That’s another thing you need is a president, somebody who will stick up for individual rights and not be pushed around, and she won’t.” See the outburst on YouTube here.

Clinton’s heated response came after being questioned on his support of abortion-on-demand. The outburst is on YouTube and is also being reported by MSNBC.

“Perhaps pro-abortion politicians will finally realize that they can’t hide their views from pro-life students,” said Billy Valentine, one of the Franciscan University of Steubenville Students for Life members who helped organize the protest of over 100 students. “Our generation is pro-life. It is amazing that these pro-abortion politicians think that they can continuously support the killing of millions of unborn children and no one will express their dissatisfaction. They think they don’t ever have to answer questions about their pro-abortion policies or the money they receive from pro-abortion lobbying organizations. This generation will no longer tolerate these types of politicians, their rhetoric, or their pro-death policies,” said Kristan Hawkins, Executive Director of Students for Life of America.

Letter in defence and wonder of the Spanish and Irish martyrs for The Faith.

February 18, 2008 · No Comments

I wanted to draw your attention to this wonderful letter by Father Angles of the SSPX. It deals with the Spanish Civil war and the beatification of the Spanish martyrs and also remind us of our own glorious history of Irish martyrs.

There is reference to two monasteries which were burned to the ground in the North of Ireland, all but two of the inhabitants seemingly murdered. Apparently nothing more of these atrocities is ever recorded. Today it may be that we never know the full extnt of the suffering of Catholic Ireland during those days of persecution, especially since all mention of the penal times and the attempt to enforce the Reformation on Ireland has been airbrushed from our history by those against Catholics.

Enjoy the read!
